In a few words

March 11, 2003 (Moscow) — The Dynasty Foundation of non-profit programs, supported by the International center for Fundamental Physics in Moscow, held a conference «We are the future of the Russian science». During the conference, the Foundation"s program winners were granted awards in the presence of honored guests and notable scientists, and reports were given.

The conference was held in the main conference hall of the Lebedev Institute of Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

«Aid programs for students and young scientists are among the principal activities of our foundation, with the support and popularization of Russian Science in the society being its main strategy», explained Elena Chernyshkova, the Dynasty Foundation deputy executive director. «The program for financing positions for young scientists straightforwardly promotes a retardation of brain exodus from this country while the scholarship program serves the purpose of popularization of Science among enrolled youth as well as revival of students" interest in book learning».

Competitive selection, as part of the Foundation"s programs, was made among senior and junior scientists majoring in theoretical physics. The competition winners will be granted scholarships and young learned physicists will, for the first time in Russia, have a chance of undertaking scientific work, occupying the positions in Russian research centers that are financed by the Foundation.

Individual applications for participation in the competitions were submitted from October 1 to November 10, 2002. Based on the established criteria of selection, all applications were examined and 138 applicants were qualified for the competition, from 41 Institutions of Higher Education and scientific establishments of Russia, including: 46 young scientists; and 92 students. 10 young scientists and 60 students were declared winners of the competition.

The selection of applications was made by the Science degree advisory board of the International Center for Fundamental Physics in Moscow.

«I am glad about the results of the competitions: mainly eminent scientists and active students-physisists submitted the applications», commented Mikhail Vasilyev, chairman of the science degree advisory board of The International Center for Fundamental Physics in Moscow, on the program results. «We believe that the Dynasty Foundation policy will help improve on a situation in the field of theoretical physics in Russia: the higher the force of attraction of scientific work in Russia is in the eyes of students — the prospective theoreticians, the stronger the feasibility of incorporating the most talented young scientists into the most advanced Russian research programs».

The winners among students will be granted scholarships in the amount of 2,000 rubles on a monthly basis for a period of 9 months. As for the scientists, 10 positions will be financed every month in the amount of 15,000 rubles during 12 months (with subsequent extensions of up to 3 years).

The Director of the Lebedev Institute, Oleg Nikolaevich Krokhin, opened the conference with a welcoming speech.

The How Of It

The program of the conference «We are the future of the Russian science» consisted of two parts: the scientific conference and solemn diploma presentation ceremony to competition winners.

Scientific Conference

In the course of scientific conference, young candidates of science, the competition winners, delivered reports on pressing problems of theoretical physics, and students, the scholarship holders, took part in the discussion of the reports. This pattern of the event made it possible, inter alia, to lay emphasis on the conference"s scientific and developmental missions.

The Director of the Lebedev Institute of Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Oleg Nikolaevich Krokhin, delivered a warm welcoming speech.

The speakers touched upon the subjects they had been working on of late:

The participants of the conference assembled again for discussion of scientific program after a short coffee break:

After discussion of the report all participants of the scientific portion of the conference had dinner at the «Academy» restaurant, situated nearby.

Solemn awarding of the winners

Presentation portion of the conference began with congratulations of the sponsors and honored guests, who gave many kind words and expressed profound gratitude to Zimin D.B., the Foundation"s founder and organizer of the Dynasty Foundation"s programs for students and scientists. Praise was also given to the International Center for Fundamental Physics in Moscow and members of its Science degree advisory board for their work in selecting the winners.

In the beginning of the Presentation portion of the conference, the founder of the Dynasty Foundation Dmitry Borisovich Zimin accompanied by guests of honor Vitaly Lazarevich Ginzburg, Leonid Veniaminovich Keldysh, Oleg Nickolaevich Krokhin (FIAN institute), Lars Brink (Gŏteborg Institute), Victor Rybakov, Isaak Markovich Khalatnikov (Landau Institute), Sergei Krotov (Physics and Mathematics magazine "Quantum") and others joined the participants of the conference.

Representatives of the most esteemed Russian and foreign non-profit and donor organizations Natalia Samoilenko (Vladimir Potanin Charity Foundation), Natalia Kaminarskaya (Donors" Forum), Vyacheslav Bakhmin (Soros Fund), Steven Schmidt and Tatyana Kipchatova (Eurasia Foundation), Olga Alekseeva (CAF), Irina Kuklina (British Council), Steven Solnik (Ford Foundation) and others attended the conference.

High regard for the conference was shown by representatives of the mass media — Grigory Zelenko («Znanie-Sila» Knowledge is power magazine), Lubov Strelnikova («Chemistry and Life»), Marina Astvatsaturyan (Echo of Moscow), Lev Ambinder (Publishing House «Commersant»), Elena Topoleva (Agency of Social information), Yuri Pletner (RSCI), representatives of Stolichnaya evening paper, «Lomonosov», «What"s New in Science» magazines and others.

The presentation portion of the conference was opened by the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Leonid Veniaminovich Keldysh who is a deputy chairman of the board of the International Center for Fundamental Physics in Moscow. Mr. Keldysh greeted all those present and pointed to the importance of initiatives such as the Dynasty Foundation"s program of support for Russian science.

Mr. Lars Brink, a full member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Chairman of the Board of the International Center for Fundamental Physics in Moscow (ICFPM), drew attention to the importance of the popularization of science and the large scientific potential of Russia, and wished that all the Dynasty Foundation"s programs would continue unabated. During his speech Mr. Brink cited the final words from the movie "Casablanca" and told the audience a few allegorical stories.

When the evening"s master of ceremonies, academician and director of the FIAN Institute Oleg Nickolaevich Krokhin, took the floor again, and after a short welcoming speech in honor of newcomers and those who saw him during the scientific portion of the conference, called the audience"s attention to the high quality of the scientific reports heard in the morning and also pointed to a key role of the ICFPM members in the program implementation. Mr. Krokhin pointed out that on the whole today"s event was the first event of such significance organized with the active support of the ICFPM. In the end, the founder of the Dynasty Foundation Dmitry Borisovich Zimin asked for the floor. He voiced the hope that Russian science-support programs would make further progress and that the students and scientists that had received the scholarships of his foundation would be able to repay them, with interest, in future after becoming Nobel prize winners.

Before the awarding presentation ceremony, the head of the Scientific degree advisory board, Mikhail Andreevich Vasilyev, took the microphone and in brief told the audience what criteria had been used to select applications and qualify winners.

At last, the winners were named and granted commemorative personalized diplomas to the loud applause of the audience.

Sergei Krotov, deputy editor-in-chief of the school Physics and Mathematics magazine «Quantum», stepped up on the stage and congratulated the winners of the scientist"s competition. He awakened kind, nostalgic reminiscences of the majority of the audience. (By the way, the latest edition of «Quantum» magazine, which is also supported by the Dynasty Foundation, was available at the registration desk). The diplomas were granted to young candidates of sciences to the thunderous applause of the audience.

Then, students in groups of 10, one-by-one, stepped up to receive diplomas and one of the dignitaries greeted every group. The most privileged was a 10-student group that was greeted by a maotre of Russian and world physics — Vitaly Ginzburg in person. Vitaly Lazarevich pointed out that he was presenting awards for the first time in his long life!

In the end, all guests and participants of the conference moved to the Column Hall where a festive freshet was awaiting. At the entrance to the hall Victor Shenderovich, the other guest of the event, who was late for its official portion, met the participants of the conference. All participants of the conference who assembled here from all parts of Russia spoke about the high level of organization and warm spiritual atmosphere created by the sponsors of the event.
